Of PDE, Facebook and Photography

I have a lot of reservations about the Americans. They eat a lot of cheese, drink way too much Cola and pour Ketchup on everything. Not to mention since they dominate every sort of market in the globe, companies build products first for America and then tweak it to suit other countries. Of course, this is not always the case, but when you come across something as a global product, it’s usually something to do with the United States. Let’s not even talk about their movies here. They themselves try to expose their government at the same time showcasing that only they can save the world! All this aside, I respect them for their other trait, I call PDE or Public Display of Emotions. They have an excellent way of making people feel special in a crowd. Raising a toast during a quiet dinner and appreciating how important the folks at the table are is indeed a very good thing. Our brought up has never been such. We were told to assume a few gestures of gratitude though the other perso...

Of Music, Philosophy and Happiness

I was told in my childhood that mastering the Vedas required a certain scientific temper and proficiency of the Samskrut language. Once understood though, it was unlike any chapter you come across even in your highly revised syllabus. They contain knowledge ranging from how to conduct oneself in everyday life upto understanding the purpose of the same. Vedic mathematics and science had long back proved what we are discovering now. Well, that's a story for another day. For now, I want to talk about the hard to master part. It seems that the Sama Veda was written specifically to spread knowledge among the masses. They took the musical route to aid the process. Many could relate to it because of it's simplicity and I guess it is he inherent nature of the human mind to understand concepts better when they have some sort of harmony. Ever since, music has been a part of our lives in one form or another. Today, we may not look at it as a source of knowledge, but ...

Of policies, suits and briefcases

I think as Indians, we embrace chaos very easily. Our colonies may not be peaceful with children playing on the road, cars honking for no joy, folks talking mindlessly over mobile phones on topics that can very much wait etc., Very few dress up to draw attention, while others show off wealth by adorning themselves with grand jewelry. The truth is that our ideas are very much different from the west and it's something we should all factor in before taking major decisions. For instance, the multi million dollar, fast food behemoth KFC had to rethink their menu, while McDonanld's introduced a vegetarian only stall in parts of our country shows the how seriously they consider our market. Someone asked me recently as to how the west has influenced us at all and how they are not a threat to our country. Well, let me explain. When our country had to be conquered, the top minds had to first divide us on various levels including language, food, clothing etc., Today we are more com...

2012 - A recap

Quite an eventful year came to an end yesterday. We survived the much hyped Apocalypse, the nation came together to support a cause that still haunts thousands everyday and Mr. Modi stuck a hat-trick. While the reason behind the country coming together for it's own revolution is painful to imagine, one must certainly hope that the cause will not go in vain. 2012 started with a low on the academic front, with what my MBA plans taking a major beating early on. Hopes were dashed, leaving me languishing on the career front. With a lot of self belief and motivation, I dared to tread the road less travelled. Things chugged along merrily at work, as   began to sort out my personal life. The first milestone came in the form of an epic ride to Kalady. A journey which transformed me at various levels, leaving me with a lot of learning on fluidity of life. It definitely deserves a place in my story telling sometime in the future. With a lot of enthusiasm after this, we did embark ...
