'The' Journey

Life's a constant learning curve. Even when you breath your last, you realise who are the important ones surrounding you and who chose to walk away.  Moving on with life, meeting new people, finding friends in the most unlikely of them is just something I personally love. During a conversation, one such topic which came up was; "Who's your best friend?". This is definitely not as naive that you've to think back to your school days where you had one person has your best(est) friend. You dressed up similarly, ate together, played together, laughed and cried together. What my buddy was onto was that a best friend is situational, subjective. One day, a colleague who comes to rescue that mistake maybe that person, the other day it would be someone who saved you from the worst of situations. Feel another story in the making? Let's see shall we.. Regular readers would know by now that I enjoy riding, sometimes even without a destination in mind. One of those rides...

When Technology marries art

Love him or hate him, you simply can’t ignore him. Steve Jobs was one of the great leaders of our era. Although, this post might come across as a bit of a delay in terms of tributes to the great man, I thought it best to simply put down what I feel about Apple. Jobs was called many things except a philanthropist of our times. No donations were made in his name but very few know that he funded various universities across the world to help build technology and innovative ideas.  He would straight away admit that he’d copied an idea. In his own way, the man was right. I read somewhere that an average human brain processes around 80,000 ideas every single day! Considering the billions around us, won’t those ideas overlap? So learn to excuse him for that bit. He was a marketing genius and knew exactly what he wanted to do. The most profound statement I can think of is when he effortlessly demonstrated iPhone 4 users to hold their devices using their left hand rather than the righ...

A Falcon and a Bat on a riding holiday

Image
It’s the onset of monsoon, probably not the ideal time for a biking holiday especially in the Western ghats. But paucity of time (read work) meant we had very limited options for this long awaited ride. Many were held up with families over the weekend which left my friend and me to go on this adventure. No pressure then, even if things go slightly out of hands! I left most of the route planning to my friend, who is obsessed about National highways and the twisties. (Mostly because of his R15 aka Falcon). Not sure where the guy learnt using google maps, but he generally decides on some kickass roads. After some research, he zeroed in on this To ensure we were not the type who don’t care about health and safety, we started shopping for bungee cords, balaclavas, energy bars, medi kit, Gatorade etc., Quite some thought was spared on the stops as well. However, as we’ll see later, not many things go according to plan. The first of these examples came in the form of...

A lonely night at the airport

The concept of story telling has indeed come a long way. It was my grandmother and then my parents who used to introduce me to this fantasy world which was supposed to soften me when I used to be my stubborn self. But I guess as with many things around us, story telling has evolved from those fantasy tales to boardrooms and coffee shops where you end up narrating those instances which differentiate you from the herd. In this format, you can choose to make a fool of yourself or bring out the GRE candidate in you to that make others hate their lives. So, what's this all about? Times have moved on so much that we rarely have enough time to spend with our dear ones. Whether a work-o-holic or not, you end up meeting those old pals from school in the virtual media. Finally, when you do decide to catch up, what do you share? While career is sure to make everyone envy you, there are those hilarious moments which are embarrassing but popular! Let's rewind the clock to 4th April. I ...

Is this what we call 'Progress'?

Once termed 'retirement paradise', Bangalore has come a long long way. I was very young to understand all the IT boom that took over the place in the early 90s and had no idea the city would grow this much. A lack of planning and vision has ensured a lot of suffering for quite sometime to come. After quite a lot of observation, I'm struggling to cope up with this 'growth' term. Yes, it's expanded at a rapid pace but where is the necessary infrastructure? Where is the beautiful greenery? Where's the awesome weather that made Bangalore so famous in the first place? A lot of noise was created around the 'Namma Metro' recently. Sheer lack of planning has made it a spectacular failure. It's not that the route by itself is not perfect, but also the fact that the workers over there have done a half *** job! Huge trenches, massive potholes, pimpled roads are only the icing on the cake dare I say. Make no mistake, I'm a huge fan of the city. Howe...

Ambitious but (not) Rubbish

Keen viewers of the television series ‘TopGear’ will immediately recognize the title phrase. For those who do not what TopGear is, well here you go. It’s the most watched car show in the world with over 350 million global audiences. Though the show is mainly supposed to focus on cars and the automotive sector at large, it’s not really the case. TopGear is known for its tongue in cheek comedy and outright fun ways of testing cars. The presenters always end up challenging the ordinary by building amphibious cars, electric cars, convertible people carriers; you name it. However, they all end with a fireball and ‘ambitious but rubbish’ statement. So, why am I talking about it here you ask? Well, the other day, when I was watching a formula 1 grand prix, my dad asked a simple question. (You can probably solve a differential equation easier than answering such honest queries.) It went something like this; “Who would pay a fortune to see these cars go round in circles?!” I’m sure those who ...

'cause we're human

No one wants to lead an unhappy life. We all want our friends and family to surround and comfort us in good times and bad. And so life goes on. There are moments which we cherish and bring us joy. Then again, the same lot suddenly decide to let go of you. Whenever such a situation arises, all your philosophical gurus have loads of gyaan to share. They say that the relationship was cut because the "role of that person in your life has ended and it's time to make room for new ones". But what about all the memories left behind? It's definitely not easy to erase all that in a flash. The process is lengthy and not to mention utterly taxing on you and others around you. After seeing a lot in your life, you do get cynical at some point. The ray of hope that keeps you going diminishes without letting you see the horizon. Testing times like these are a part of everyone's life; though we may not have the same reasons. So, how do you cope? Well, here a few steps which ha...
