I Bow to thee, Doctor
I would like to dedicate this post to all those doctors out there who are saving countless lives around the clock. You maybe wondering as to what I am trying to say. Well, lately I have watched a couple of movies showing the commitment and determination to save lives and make a difference. The movies are, The Motorcycle Diaries and The Last King of Scotland. I guess you would have watched them by now and wondering what is so special?
The Motorcycle Diaries is just a collection of events of one of the most radical and daring individuals of this era, Che Guevara. The movie shows the adventures he has as a young man. The path he chooses to understand his motherland and its people better. An old motorcycle, a trusted friend and the desire to explore South America. As a doctor he serves patients suffering from leprosy. He revolutionizes the practices and unites the sick with the rest of the world. Later on, he takes a different course and becomes a revolutionary.
The Last King of Scotland is about a young man from Scotland who goes to Uganda to help the handful of doctors in the region. It is quite inspirational to see how he sacrifices his luxuries and decides to help the needy. It is not an easy decision, trust me. That however is only half the story. Although there is a change in the outcome of his journey, there a lots of things to learn from it.
By being doctors, these characters were able to see the real side of the sick and needy. Something we can never learn by studying in class rooms or watching it on televisions. It is an opportunity that I might never have in my life. That is what disappoints me. There is not much I can do in the field I have been studying. Maybe we will design and implement things which will help the remotest of places but there is very less we can do when it comes to interacting with people. One thing is for sure, doctor or not, we must all try to make a difference.
