WHAT’S COOL AND WHAT’S NOT?
I apologize for the lack of activity here, thanks to internal assessments and usual college issues. Now that I am done with all of it, am back!! After thinking of hundreds of things to write, the thought of how the “do’s” and “don’ts” have changed, came to me.
Its 2 hours to my next internals and the preparation is not encouraging. The poor preparation is not just the case with me but my classmates also. There is an option of skipping it and take it the next time. But somewhere there is voice that tells me to take a chance in the next few hours. However, a few of my friends decide to skip the test. No effort was made to read even a single question!!
What I am trying to say here is very simple. Two decades ago, your parents would have yelled at you for taking an afternoon nap when you had nothing to do. It was a disgrace to be lazy and lethargic. On the subject of exams, well, a month or two in advance was allocated exclusively for them and a lot of planning would have been done. People would always think of things to keep themselves busy and occupied. There was the curiosity to learn and improve.
Things have changed. You’ll agree with me on this. It is now “cool” to be careless and not do important things. By important, I mean reading, doing your assignments, etc., Taking a nap just before the day of exam is a point of discussion and the person enjoys being in the limelight. A student approaching his/her mentor regarding the subject is reason enough to ridicule him/her. A technical talk or a science lecture is considered something only for the “geeky” student and is generally left out of conversations (or even gatherings). It’s not like others will get into companies and give presentations on the weather or politics. The answer to why things have changed like this is something I will never understand. Sure, we must all have time to relax and enjoy ourselves, but it must be to a tangible extent. After commenting much on this, I have to say, it is tough to be both “cool” and “geeky”, though some people make an effort. Guess who? :-)
Oh, I forgot to mention. We are having our department fest this weekend. You can expect details on that in my next post.
