Of Age, Time and Goals
Music by itself strikes the right chords in the heart. Rain makes us take shelter at the earliest and a good piece of tarmac makes you push hard in the car you're driving. Combine the trio and the situation is completely different; a long drive on a winding road with the perfect music in the background on a rainy day. I can already see you fantasizing about it. For some it evokes the romantic in them, others are reminded of their college and a few, well they just want to drive. That's the beauty, no two are alike and this diversity is what makes the world go around.
The scenario above leaves you thinking about some of the happiest or saddest moments of your life. While I was not on a particularly winding bit of road, the drizzle was perfect not to throw traffic out of order and Ozzy in the background was well, Ozzy, absolutely awesome, the 'What am I doing with my life?' thought popped up. If you're my age and haven't come across that question, it means you either have a perfect life or are yet to face a lot of surprises that life has in store.
Let's wind back a few years back and I was this boring, shy person who rarely cared about socializing; not that I'm anymore interesting now, but let's move on. Like many, I had this crazy dream of driving a Ferrari by the time I'm 'X' years old, own a Ducati by 'Y' years etc., Funnily enough, I seemed to be on track as well. I wanted to get into the music business and become a star, have a 'cool' lifestyle et al.
Back to the present, little of those dreams have been achieved. While I'm still enthusiastic about cars and music, it doesn't look like I'll be recording anytime soon, nor driving that Ferrari by the time I'm 'X' years old. Question is, does it make my life bad? Have I missed out on something?
The way I see it, things are simple; stop putting a time table in your life. Instead of trying to measure your success with respect to time, appreciate it by the quality. Understand that life is fluid and you are not in control of a lot things. Directly or indirectly, people around you influence your thoughts, activities and decisions, so be in good company. Dreaming big is never a problem, but ensure they are tangible, again, not with respect to time, but quality.
It's also an excellent idea and time to slowly let go of the past, embrace the present and plan for the future. Stop brooding over how carefree you were in college, of late night parties and missed classes. Accept that you're now in a different place in your life, so are your friends and everyone needs their space. This goes a long way in maintaining healthy relationships. Chart out your immediate goals with respect to your job or hobbies, work sincerely towards them, without losing sight of the ultimatum that you've wanted to achieve. As with most cases, there is no definitive answer to all queries. Age is a number at times while it does not apply to others. Only you can be the judge of it and that's all the freedom you'll need. Time then to take out a piece of paper and jot down to see where you stand.
These lines are not taken from any self help book or column. Rather, these are just words straight from the heart on a late night with some Ozzy Osbourne in the background again. Until next time!
